Zambia Horse Safaris - Time Share Option

This is a unique opportunity to be a part of an exciting new horse safari operation setting up on the edges of Kafue National Park in Zambia .

Zambia is situated at the Northern tip of what is known as Southern Africa and is a landlocked state of approx 752,610 km sq. Home to the legendary Victoria falls and numerous other conservation areas it has been given the name The Real Africa - a title it proudly holds as its number of tourists increases annually. This country still has vast tracts of pristine Wilderness, ideal for new safari companies and perfect for those who wish to experience all the wonders of a game environment.

Kafue Horse Safaris (KHS) is owned and operated by Steven and Lucy Rufus and bring to the tourism industry a wealth of knowledge and professionalism supported by the success of both Limpopo Valley Horse Safaris and South Africa Horseback Safaris (SAHBS) over the last 14 years. Steven left Botswana in 2004 and with Lucy they have built SAHBS in to a profitable and well known company in the horse holiday industry. Always looking for new ventures and with the advent of a land reform act in South Africa they have sealed a 30 year concession agreement to ride and build their new venture in this wonderful country.

Opening in March 2009 this very special horse safari company will have access to one of the largest National Parks in Zambia . Kafue National Park covers an area of some 22480 sq km and encompasses a vast and impressive range of scenery and wildlife. The lovely Kafue River and its perennial tributaries contribute to the great diversity of the landscape which makes this one of the most interesting and rewarding African parks to visit.

Additionally the base for Kafue Horse Safaris (KHS) will be near to the glorious Lake Itezhi-tezhi at the South Eastern base of the park, (which covers an area of 370 sq km) and its varied shore line includes grassy banks cropped by hippo, rocky bays and stretches of submerged trees which provide perfect perches for water birds, such as the fish eagle - the national symbol of Zambia - cormorant and a host of other birds.

There are twenty three species of large herbivores in the park and souring areas, consisting of elephant, zebra, wildebeest and buffalo. There are also eleven species of large carnivores - including impressive packs of wild dog - and a huge diversity of reptiles, amphibians and bird life. All of which combine to make this an amazing game viewing experience.

Kafue Horse Safaris (KHS)

Consisting of a six room lodge, to be built in local style of thatch and reed with tented accommodation to provide a cool, comfortable and relaxing stay to its future clients. Food will be wholesome and plentiful utilizing the talents of a very experienced Food & Beverage Manager whose previous credits include Mashatu Main Camp in Botswana .

A dining and lounge area will overlook one of the many water pans in the concession allowing clients to game view whilst socializing and take advantage of some of the huge herds of Elephant and Buffalo that pass through the area.

Horse guides come with a vast wealth of experience and knowledge and will include Steven Rufus and Gerry van der Westhuizen (previously of Africa Horse Safaris in Okavanga Delta). Together they make a formidable team with a passion for all things African and a very visible love of horses and the bush.

Riding will be lodge based initially with one night at a fly camp in the Kafue National Park , and consist of morning and afternoon rides of approx 3 hours each. Other activities available will be walking safaris and once established boat cruises on the nearby Lake Itezhi-tezhi . Initally this will be a horse safari operation only, but as the business expands there will be potential to accept non riders for other activites.

The horses will arrive with Steven and Lucy from SAHBS and consist of a first class group of South African Boerperd crosses, Warmbloods, THB and Shire X. All the horses have been personally selected for their ride ability and temperament and have delighted clients of SAHBS with their paces and willingness to please.

Accessibility to the camp is from Lusaka via light aircraft direct to a bush air strip approx 12km away, chartered flights will be coming in to / out of camp twice a week. Additionally you can choose to self drive from Lusaka which will take approx 5 hours, however it has to be noted that this Real African Country has some authentic African roads which can make progress a bit slower than normal!

Livingstone and the world famous Victoria Falls is less than 200km away to the South of the park. 4x4 vehicles are typically a must for rural travel in Zambia .

Seasons - there are three different seasons in the Park. The hot wet season is from December to April, the hot dry season is September to November and the cold dry season is May to August. Each season brings its own delights with different vegetation and game viewing opportunities around each of the months tracking lush foliage in the wet season to amalgamation of large herds of animals in the dry. Horse riding will be tailored in terms of start time to accommodate the season, the camp will be accessible all year round even in the wet season which will allow potential clients to see the park in all its glory all year round.

The camp will be open from March through to first week in January each year, with clients arriving on a weekly basis via the two different options. Typically each client will stay 6 nights each trip, but there are alternatives for a 10 night stay as well should they wish to have a longer period for their holiday.
